This course provides an introduction to demography. After the course, students are familiar with:

  • the definitions of demography and population studies
  • basic concepts of the demography
  • main components of population dynamics (fertility, mortality, migration, population structure)
  • demographic data and basic indicators of demography (rates etc.)
  • tools for describing the dimensions of time (lexis diagram) and population structure (age pyramid)
  • theories on main demographic changes (first and second demographic transition)
  • main demographic issues (e.g., increase in longevity, fertility decline and population ageing, global population growth, and different issues addressed in special interest papers).

This is an onsite course. We will meet every week once or twice for face-to-face sessions. We also work in Moodle e-learning environment, where you will gain access to course materials (including guidelines), submit written tasks, interact with other participants and teaching staff, and receive feedback.
