Introduction:

This course is aimed for bachelor’s degree students at the department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering of UTU. The course comprises of both lectures and supervised calculation exercise classes. After each lecture, the students will have one week to go through pre-defined questions to work on them and to find solutions. Next, the teacher will solve the problems at the exercise class.

Learning outcome:

After completing this course, the students will know the most important basic concepts of mechanics of materials. They will also learn to analyze a simple structural case under various loading conditions.

The content of the course includes:

1.  Stress, strain, and their relationship in a linearly elastic material

2. Mechanical properties of materials and experimental testing

3. Normal stress in axially loaded members

4.  Torsional loading of a shaft or tube

5.  Beam and shafts under bending

6.  Shear stress in a beam

7.  Transformation of the stress components

8.  Strain transformation

9.  Design of beams and shafts under bending and shear loads

10.  Deflection of beams and shafts

11. Buckling of columns

12. Energy methods to solve problems involving deflection.
