Teacher: Samuli Helle (sayrhe@utu.fi)

The aim of the workshop is to provide an introduction to unobserved latent variables, and related variables like composites or emergent variables, and how researchers can use them to represent scientific concepts they are interested in. Being able to account for measurement error in scientific constructs, latent variables provide more reliable causal inference and thus possibly more generalized scientific answers.

The workshop will be held online. For those who want credits, more details are provided in the workshop. Zoom link will appear below closer to date...

There is 1 credit available for completing the coursework (INVEST additional advanced methods). Post-doctoral and senior researchers are also welcome to audit the workshop!

Basic knowledge of statistics (e.g. regression analysis) is assumed. I will also provide some examples using Rstudio, which can be downloaded freely (with the base R) from: https://cran.ma.imperial.ac.uk/ https://www.rstudio.com/products/rstudio/download/#download. A basic knowledge of Rstudio is useful but not essential (i.e., you can just follow the examples without trying yourself if you want). Those who want credits are assumed to complete a short assignment - all the code needed in the assignment (using Rstudio) are provided in the course (the assignment can be completed using any suitable software).
