Objectives

The aim of this course is to systematically reflect upon the global and European/ regional and various national efforts to cope with the major global crises of the 2000s and assess their successes and failures. The crises include the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, the migration crisis of 2015, the financial crisis of around 2010, and the environmental/ climate crises. Theoretical concepts such as emergency governance, resilience, securitization, or ecological reflectivity will be critically scrutinized. The ultimate question is, of course, in which ways we could possibly develop the governance mechanisms at hand for better coping with comparable crises in the future.
