Objectives
The aim of this course is to improve the ability of graduate students to successfully publish academic articles and books in English. The primary focus will be on writing itself, but we will also cover other aspects of the process, from the planning phase to working with peer reviewers and editors. Accordingly, we will consider a range of specific criteria: targeting the appropriate type of journal and/or publisher, working with differences of style and English language variants (UK and US), and understanding the revisions phase. Outside of the discussion on language and writing per se, we will also address key decisions when publishing, such as publication forum ratings (e.g., JUFO) and open access. This is not a class for beginners of English; participants are expected to already have general fluency in English writing, as all students will submit a paper to the class for review and discussion.
