Objectives

After taking this course, the students will be able to:
- explain the concept of design variables, constraints, and objective functions.
- recognize principles of structural optimization.
- mathematically formulate a structural design optimization problem.
- solve problems analytically (when possible) and computationally.
- appreciate the need for optimization to improve a structure.
- use numerical techniques for practical size, shape, and topology optimization problems.
- read and understand the research articles on structural optimization especially topology optimization.
- use topology optimization and CAD tools to build a 3D model.
