In this seminar, we will focus on a range of approaches to visual culture, the role of images and imaging, and how images and visual displays produce cultural meanings. Through readings and assignments, we will learn to pose questions regarding visuality as a way to make sense of the world as well as a way to study the United States. In particular, we will seek to make connections between not just what we see but how and where we see and look at images and imaging. Ultimately, we want to consider practices of looking as intrinsic parts of both cultural meaning-making and knowledge production processes in and out of academia. The class meets on every other Monday on even weeks from January 8 to May 13, except on April 1, when there is no class.  The learning goals of this class are premised on joint discussion, so in-person attendance will be mandatory.
