Objectives

After passing the course the student
- Has a more comprehensive understanding of the concepts of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology
- Understands the principles of genetic engineering, and is able to provide examples of different types of genetic modifications in metabolic context
- Is familiar with different techniques and molecular biology tools that are used for engineering microbial hosts
- Is able to describe the key features, and give examples of the use of heterotrophic bacteria and photoautotrophic cyanobacteria in metabolic engineering
- Is able to discuss the possibilities and limitations of metabolic engineering as part of industrial biotechnology and future sustainable development
