As an introduction to Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, this course includes a general overview of Buddhism in India with an emphasis on history, creation of canon in the formation of religious memes, and the question of ultimate truth as treated by the main Buddhist philosophical schools. Turning to Buddhist Tibet, the second half of the course contrasts the analytical approach to enlightenment to tantric practice and ritual, mythology and cosmology, the concept of guru, and Buddhist ethics. No prior knowledge of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism is necessary.
