After passing the course the student is able to:
- evaluate the clinical performance of a diagnostic assay.
- discuss preanalytical errors and assay interference.
- value accuracy, quality control and standardization of diagnostic assays.
- describe the career path and the role of a clinical chemist in a clinical laboratory.
- discuss the approaches for biomarker discovery.
- understand the different clinical study designs for biomarker discovery.
- describe analytes and associated clinical settings currently monitored in clinical laboratories and recognize specific needs for diagnostic and assay improvements related to them.
- discuss timely trends in clinical chemistry from the perspective of clinical needs including novel markers and opportunities provided by emerging technologies.
