Objectives
After the course, the student will have a general understanding of gender and sexuality as important topics within several strands of music studies since the 1980s and 1990s. They will have learnt about some of the main theoretical and methodological frameworks in which gender and sexuality have been explored in music research, such as theories of gender norms, systems and representation, performativity, queer and trans studies, and intersectional and new materialist approaches. The student will have knowledge both about the specific ways in which gender and sexuality can manifest themselves in musical activities and about the influence of cross-disciplinary gender studies on music research. The student will be able to independently apply perspectives of the course in their assignments and dissertations.
