Objectives

The aim of this course is to systematically reflect upon the conditions of the current global order – an order that is challenged by deepening great power contestation as well as a range of serious crises, from war to pandemics, from climate concerns to migratory waves. In light of existing scholarly literature, the course takes a look at the historical changes of global order, of the nature of global (emergency) governance in the new millennium, of the connections between the key players of the international system, China, the US and the European Union, and the ways in which the crises modus shapes all these. The ultimate normative question is whether there are any possibilities to mitigate the impact of crises and contestation on order building so as to make effective, long-term global governance solutions possible (for the sake of, e.g., environmental protection or arms control).
