The course covers the European Union’s external action, the working of its foreign policy decision-making structures, and analysis of the Union as an actor in the international system.

Objectives

After completing the course, the student should be familiar with the main institutions and activities of the European Union’s external action, and possess a robust understanding of the Union’s foreign policy. Furthermore, the student will be introduced to the academic literature analysing EU foreign policy and the Union as an international actor.

Study methods
The course consists of lectures (18 hours), background reading material, and writing assignments. The course can be completed in a 2 ECTS form by attending the lectures, studying background reading material, turning in a learning diary (10-15 pp) and completing other small writing assignments for the lectures. Additional 3 ECTS can be earned by turning in an essay (12-18 pp) on EU foreign policy topic.
