Objectives

Students will gain an understanding of the historical context and development of Canada as a sovereign state in North America, parallel to but distinct from the United States. The course discusses • the historical and contemporary position of Canada in North America and the world • the historical and geographical development of the neo-European society that became Canada, from its French and English (and Scottish) colonial origins to its present multicultural character • the history and present state of contact with the aboriginal peoples • the history and development of Québec within Canada. Students develop their critical discussion skills in live contact teaching situations.
