EAST Korean Literature Workshop 2025-2028

Learning outcomes

Students will learn contemporary Korean history, society, and culture by reading contemporary Korean literature. They will be familiar with historical context of East Asia by looking into the fictious worlds which a selected literature illustrates. Students will be able to discover various social issues through experiencing Korean culture by reading contemporary Korean literature with a critical perspective. Students can read the selected literature in Korean, English, or any other language they prefer. The learning diary and discussion in the classroom will be in English.

Transferable skills such as critical reading and thinking, as well as critical writing will be developed during the course.

Content

This course includes four parts:

• Introductory class: The chosen book for the semester will be introduced (either electronically or physically) at the first meeting • Reading the selected literature in any language available. • Book Club Style Discussion • Writing a learning diary in English (1 or 2 pages, Font Size 11, Time New Roman, Spacing 1,15)

Study methods

2 x 2 hours (4 hours) of lectures and discussion, reading the chosen book (approx.18 hours) with a learning diary (approx.5 hours) to be completed as a final assignment.

Further information

Requirements: Students are expected to attend two meetings (the first meeting and the last discussion). Active participation in the book club discussion is expected. Preparation for the discussion includes reading the chosen book in advance of class meetings. Writing a learning diary includes one mandatory reading and one optional reading. The learning diary should be reflected on these academic reading as well as the fiction. All the reading materials will be given on the Moodle course page.
