Objectives
This course introduces key theories and methods for understanding, analyzing, playing and developing games. It consists of three parts. In the first part of the course, students will familiarize with key theoretical approaches to game and gamification. In the second part, analytical methodologies and practice-oriented methods are introduced. These theoretical frameworks and methods are then applied and experimented with in the third part of the course, where students will work in groups to develop digital or analog games.
After the course, students understand the key theories and methodological frameworks in critical game studies. Students can use these theoretical and methodological tools to analyze games. In addition, students acquires skills to work in groups, to receive feedback from and to offer comments and suggestions to peers, and to apply critical game studies analytical lens to game making and play practices.
