Objectives
The interdisciplinary course Animal Law examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding animals, animal protection, and conservation recognizing the growing importance of animal welfare. Through a comprehensive study of relevant national and international legislation, case studies, and theoretical frameworks, students will examine from a comparative perspective the way in which the law regulates the treatment of animals, explore the intersection of law, ethics, and animal welfare, and deepen their understanding of the rapidly evolving field of animal law.
After the course the students will have developed a broader and deeper knowledge of basic principles and concepts as well as specific aspects of animal law and the ethic theories in relation to the use and protection of animals. A critical understanding of the complex relationship between law, ethics, and the different interests at stake when it comes to animal welfare will enable the students to identify major concerns and analyse current problems as well as future developments and perspectives concerning the protection of animals in today´s globalized world. The course aims to challenge the way the students think about animals in a legal context, to develop skills in critical analysis based on law and ethics, and to encourage independent thinking
