Objectives
By the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the political, social, and religious development of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Ruthenian lands within the wider context of early modern Europe. They will become familiar with the institutions and political culture of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth and the diverse communities that shaped the region. Students will develop the ability to analyse early modern primary sources and interpret them within their historical context. Through engagement with both primary materials and modern scholarship, they will learn to evaluate different historiographical interpretations of Eastern European history and to reflect on the historical legacy of Lithuania and Ruthenia for contemporary identities in the region.
