Objectives
After completing the course, the student
• understands how important it is to protect company’s investments in research and development with IP as well as how important it is for companies to ensure valid entitlement to their employees’ inventions
• knows that different employment regimes provide different mechanisms for transferring rights to inventions made by employees as well as different approach to compensating rights to the inventions
• can address the variety of country-specific differences in a company’s invention management procedures and is able to apply them even in cross-border inventions where different rules to different inventors apply
• learns that there are also some country-specific provisions that affect the place of filing a first patent application in certain cases, and that not complying with these provisions can affect the patent’s validity
• gets a comprehensive overview of the legal aspects and potential pitfalls of cross-border operations related to inventive activities of a multinational company, during the process from an invention to a patent.
• learns to identify and solve potential conflict situations beforehand, in order to assure compliance.
