What makes Tolkien tick? That is, what were the major influences on his works, and why do they Remain so popular today? This course focuses on major influences on Tolkien, Including childhood and family life, war experience, scholarship, interest in other cultures and mythologies Including English language and literature, and impact of fellow Inklings Such as CS Lewis. We will Also touch is a genre of studies, examining his interweaving of poems, songs, proverbs, legends, myths, and the role of LOTR as a 21st-century epic. And we'll consider how well the works have made the leap to contemporary genres Including film. Finally we will Examine portrait portrayal of gender, race, class, and disability in Tolkien's Legendarium. THUS we will Participate in the growing branch of scholarship known as Tolkien Studies.
