Tavoitteet
After the course, student can cope mostly in Finnish in everyday, routine communication situations but still leans on the help of the communication partner. In addition to knowing phrases and separate words student can also understand main points of longer conversations and messages. Student uses familiar, basic vocabulary and phrases. Student can ask for the communication partner to repeat or to slow down the speech. The vocabulary and expressions of the topics covered on the course are familiar to the student. Student can talk and write short texts about the topics covered on the course. Student can pronounce Finnish understandably. Student masters some basic grammar of Finnish. Along with the increasing use of Finnish the student integrates stronger to the Finnish society.
The aim of the course is to give the international Masters’ degree student a good start in Finnish language. The course helps the student to cope with various, meaningful everyday life situations, and it provides a good basis for grammar. The student is guided to pay attention to similarities and differences between Finnish language and other languages to raise language awareness. The student becomes familiar with Finnish culture and way of life. The course includes communication, pronunciation, reading and listening exercises and some writing tasks. Students practice both in pairs and in small groups, using also digital platforms. Special emphasis will be placed on communication skills. In addition, homework is be assigned throughout the course.
Themes: greetings, introducing oneself, countries, languages and nationalities, the seasons and weather, months and days of the week, numbers, expressing time, colours and other adjectives, family and relatives, clothing, food and eating, shopping: buying and paying.
Structures: vowel harmony, consonant gradation, possessive structure, the verb types and conjugation in the present tense; asking questions and responding to them; partitive and genitive singular; some aspects of the Finnish local cases.

The course focuses on improving and extending a wide range of communication skills in business and teamwork contexts. The task-based learning methods are designed to improve language skills, as well as key metaskills such as preparation, teamwork and responsibility.
The key concepts are flexibility and credibility. In the tasks we consider strategies to minimize risk and increase the chance for success, in contexts varying from job applications to press conferences. Key topic areas are recruiting, corporate social responsibility and business meetings.
