This course is meant for English majors and minors only, not for exchange students or those who are not officially registered as degree students at the Department of English.
The Story of English is one of
the core courses of the Intermediate Studies at the Department of
English. All major and minor students or English need to complete at least 20 op worth of core courses. The Story of English is a good choice either in your first or second year, possibly also in your third. Please note that this course is for the major and minor students of the English Dept, exchange students entitled to take English Dept courses, and VAO students.
ENGL3163 North American Literature in Context
Department of English: Advanced Studies & NAMS: Intermediate Studies
Objectives
After taking the course, students will be able to:
- identify and describe different theoretical approaches to the multimodality of language
- recognise recurring structures of social interaction and analyse them from a multimodal perspective
- design a small multimodal study (e.g. MA thesis) that uses video-recorded social interaction as its data

This course is designed to develop students’ awareness of academic and professional communication and focuses on foundational skills needed to communicate effectively in academic contexts and generate academically sound work. Students will develop their academic skills (e.g. search strategies and active listening), and language skills (e.g. vocabulary development and communicative competence).
Objectives
KIEN2318 English for Natural Sciences is an integrated skills academic English course, which aims to develop students’ awareness of technical and professional communication. The course focuses on the skills needed to communicate effectively in academic contexts and generate academically sound work. Students will develop their academic skills (e.g. search strategies and active listening), and language skills (e.g. vocabulary development and communicative competence).
On completion of KIEN2318 English for Natural Sciences, students will be better equipped to
- develop both their general and field specific vocabulary
- engage critically with texts (written and oral) and concepts
- follow academic communication conventions, both written and oral.
- collaborate with others to develop and produce academically sound work
- reflect on their learning strategies
Objectives
KIEN2315 English for STEM B is the second component of a two-part integrated skills academic English course. It is designed to develop students’ awareness of academic and professional communication, with a focus on sustainable development. KIEN2315 English for STEM B focuses on skills needed to communicate effectively in academic contexts and generate academically sound work. Students will develop their academic skills (e.g. active reading and synthesizing), and language skills (e.g. discussion and professional writing).
On completion of KIEN2315 English STEM B, students will be better equipped to
- employ reading strategies, and synthesize texts from their field
- engage in seminar discussions, drawing on academic sources
- research issues related to sustainability and their field
- collaborate with others to develop to produce professional texts
- follow a process approach in the production of academically sound work
ENGL 1013 English Language and Linguistics

Objectives
The student knows the standard sound system of English and its description with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as well as the basics of English word stress, speech rhythm and intonation. The student knows how to compare sound systems and is familiar with basic phonetic and phonological concepts. The student can discuss factors affecting second language pronunciation.
This integrated skills course supports students in their academic studies. Students develop their abilities in reading, writing, listening and speaking in addition to the special discourse and terminology of their fields, and create a portfolio of work to showcase these skills. Emphasis is placed on active student participation.

On completion of KIEN2762 English: Academic & Professional Skills II for Education, students will be better equipped to:
- write an academic paper and/or pedagogical task(s) using appropriate style and referencing
- work with peers and give a presentation related to their field of study
- practise academic and professional communication skills
- engage critically with texts (written and oral) and concepts
- follow a process approach in the production of academically sound work
This English course (2 credits) is offered to 2nd-year students in Early Childhood Teacher Education programme in the group BAecte22 (OKL Rauma), in the academic year 2023-2024.
