This course is designed to help students deepen their understanding of how meaning is negotiated in real-life communication. Through topics such as speech acts, turn-taking, politeness, repair strategies, and intercultural pragmatics, students will analyse authentic conversational data and reflect on communication norms in Chinese. The course will be delivered entirely through Moodle, with readings, discussion tasks, video-based analysis, and applied exercises. It builds essential skills for students preparing for study abroad, internships, or thesis work that involves language in use. The course will be maintained and taught by Jiaqi Guo and supports independent learning at an advanced level within the Chinese BA programme.

Objectives

By the end of this course the students will be able to apply English academic writing conventions as they write their Master’s thesis in English. They discuss the cultural / social /cross-cultural demands and expectations of academic writing in a second language (English) in relation to their own writing contexts and will analyze the typical sections of a Master’s thesis e.g. Introduction, Literature review, Methodology, Discussion & Conclusion, and Abstract.
By conducting an in-depth analysis of each chapter at various levels e.g. text organization, rhetorical, linguistic, and grammatical devices, the students identify the features particular to the chapter and apply this to their own thesis writing. The students will collaborate on peer assessment tasks, conduct feedback, critically evaluate and communicate their research to the group. Finally, they evaluate their overall performance and engage in critical reflection & inquiry.

This is the Moodle space for Tytti Kim's groups of EAPS II for Social Sciences: Groups 5 ((Social Policy, Sociology, Economic Sociology), 6 (Social Work), and 7 (Mixed group). 

By the end of the course, students should be able to read and analyse complex academic texts; write a short academic paper incorporating multiple sources and using appropriate writing conventions; give academic presentations in English; and communicate effectively orally and in writing in working life situations including meetings and discussions.
