The student will get acquainted with Finland’s literature, visual arts and music of the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries, set in Baltic, Nordic and broader European context. The epithet “The Golden Age of Finnish Art” will be critically analysed and approached from various viewpoints. The students will be able to understand the key phenomena in Finland’s arts, namely literature, against the backdrop of Finland’s late 19th and the early 20th century historical events.

The course introduces some key aspects of the development of Finnish culture and society from prehistoric to modern times. The students will learn about the formation of the country, its languages, the nation as an idea, and the development of Finnish identity and culture in the 20th century. The course elaborates the theories of identity, memory and nation connecting them to the historical processes and research materials. To complete the course the student needs to participate in the lectures and turn in the assignments.

The purpose of the course is to provide students with detailed information and knowledge in Finnish ways of perceiving and understanding the world, including changing natural, social and cultural environment. In addition, the lectures open the perspectives of research in history, archaeology, culture and arts studies as regards the concepts of Finnishness and their history. After completing the course, the student has acquired key information about, among other things, the Finnish world views, values, folk beliefs and religiosity, Finnish self-understanding and identity, perception of nature, ecological thinking, and the human-animal relationship. In addition, students can outline key temporal developments related to the themes as well as local and regional differences within Finnish culture.

The series of lectures introduces the Finnish way of life, including everyday sociality, values, experiences, perceptions, and beliefs. During this course a set of current discussions and research perspectives on Finnish art from the late 19th century up to the present day will be introduced and scrutinized. We will focus on a few nodal points and concrete examples inspired by recent research or exhibitions of Finnish art and/or architecture and design. The construction of cultural self-understanding, including the role of transcultural dialogues, will be highlighted. The course will provide the student with topical outlooks on Finnish culture from the point of view of Art History.
