Learning
outcomes
The purpose of the course is to provide students with detailed information and knowledge in Finnish ways of perceiving and understanding the world, including changing natural, social and cultural environment. In addition, the lectures open the perspectives of research in history, archaeology, culture and arts studies as regards the concepts of Finnishness and their history. After completing the course, the student has acquired key information about, among other things, the Finnish world views, values, folk beliefs and religiosity, Finnish self-understanding and identity, perception of nature, ecological thinking, and the human-animal relationship. In addition, students can outline key temporal developments related to the themes as well as local and regional differences within Finnish culture.
Content
The series of lectures introduces the Finnish way of life, including everyday sociality, values, experiences, perceptions, and beliefs. The course discusses both historical development and the phenomena of the contemporary Finland, both from the perspectives of the majority population and various minorities. The course reflects

The students will learn about the formation of the country, it’s languages, the nation as an idea, and the development of Finnish cultural identity in the 20th century. The course introduces theories of identity, memory and nation, and connects them to the historical processes and materials.
