The
course offers an overview of research on audiovisual analysis with an emphasis
on techniques of close reading and cultural analysis. The initial lectures will
review some of the most essential conceptual and theoretical tools required to
undertake analysis of audiovisual and other multimodal (multisensory) forms.
Later lectures will cover a range of themes and issues related to different domains
of audiovisual expression, including cinema, television, live performance, and
new digital platforms. The close readings and cultural analyses discussed in
the lectures and course readings and will place an emphasis on issues of
cultural difference, the impact of globalization and multiculturalism.
