This 6 ECTS course is open for all students at the Turku School of Economics, and completing it independently takes usually 4 to 5 months. The course can be commenced at any point of time after agreeing the analysed country with course supervisor Prof. Lauri Ojala.

This course gives you a pragmatic introduction to contemporary Trade and Transport Facilitation (TTF) issues. TTF work aims at reducing the inefficiencies on international supply chains that limit a country's ability to compete in international trade.

More specifically, the course provides:

i) a good understanding of analysis approaches and methodologies applicable in a TTF Audit (TTFA) on a country level;

ii) an overview of key multilateral and other organisations engaged in TTF work and their roles; and

iii) on-hands experience in preparing a limited TTFA for a given country/region.

The insights and TTFA skills acquired in the course help to better understand the actual trade impediments in global value chains (GVC) and also on how multilateral organisations work with concrete TTF issues.

Learning outcomes

First, you will gain a good understanding of the type and scope of Trade and Transport Facilitation (TTF) work.

Second, you will gain access to the available and relevant public domain information sources in preparing a TTF country analysis, and so that you can critically assess the quality of available information in this context.

Third, you will gain basic skills to independently conduct aggregate level country analyses as desktop research.

The course also teaches you how to compile a long report, which is excellent rehearsal e.g. for writing a M.Sc. thesis.
