Objectives
This course aims to explore the theories and practices of labor market institutions and development. How do labor regulations affect welfare in developing countries? It discusses competing theoretical frameworks and policy interventions related to decent working conditions, productivity and employment determination. Examples of cases include labor unions, legislation on minimum wages and employment protection, unemployment insurance and active labor market policies in developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Major emphasis is given to the enforcement of labor regulations.
