By the end of this course, students will be able to recognize and critically analyze the role and representation of recovery in contemporary (anglophone) literature and culture. Students will be able to discuss how recovery is tied up with current and historical conceptions of health, illness, disease and wellbeing, as well as to consider recovery in social, economic and political frameworks. Students will develop their skills in independent research, close reading and literary analysis, and will be able to discuss and reflect on a range of narrative forms and functions. Additionally, students are invited to analyze and discuss the similarities and differences between anglophone cultures of recovery and other countries, languages and cultures.
