The primary goal of this introductory course is to familiarise students with the diverse varieties of Mandarin Chinese and other Sinitic languages, situated within the broader field of sociolinguistics. The course offers a comprehensive exploration of the historical development, regional variation, and sociolinguistic status of these languages, while equipping students with a typological perspective drawn from sociolinguistic research on languages worldwide.
